Cristina Vidal Lorenzo and Esther Parpal Cabanes, researchers from the UV Arsmaya Research Group, gave the conference ‘Symbols of power among the elite Maya women. An iconographic analysis of women’s ornaments’ at the international seminar ‘Indigenous women: past and present’, organised by the Museo de la Mujer from Mexico City.
Revolving around multiple case studies, our researchers’ work focuses in creating an updated catalogue and a detailed analysis of all the symbols from a gender perspective, with the objective of clearing up what the femininity ideals were, if any at all, and the roles assigned to the women within the spheres of power. Even though they are certain of the importance of these roles in the historical development of this civilisation, they have often been pushed to the edges of history by traditional literature. Therefore, this work has been developed with the aim of rescuing and disseminating them through the community.
