As part of Monkey Week, during the session “FMA: figures, letters (and music)”, the preliminary findings of the FMA Impact Report were presented. This study aims to quantify the economic and social impact of festivals in Spain.

The official programme can be accessed here (https://monkeyweek.org/lecture/fma-cifras-y-letras-y-musica-presentacion-del-informe-de-impacto-de-la-fma/) and the full video is available at (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thxqq6l1cMk). The final report will be published in the first quarter of 2026.

According to Diego Muñoz, “the aim of this report is to systematise the existing knowledge and overcome the lack of methodological homogeneity found in previous studies.” He adds that “we need to measure economic impact more broadly and comparably in order to legitimise the social and economic value of festivals.”

Preliminary results presented by Fernando Álvarez confirm that “festivals not only generate direct economic activity, but also drive the economy through the attraction of attendees”. Álvarez highlights that “the economic effect is mostly indirect and induced, showing their capacity to transform the territory and stimulate the Spanish economy”. The most benefited sectors include “hospitality, industry and commerce, with music festivals contributing significantly to the cultural GDP”.

The report will continue to develop over the coming weeks, with full data analysis and final publication in early 2026.
