The Econcult research group of the University of Valencia will be part of the first participative process for the recovery of the areas affected by the DANA of October 29, 2024, a tragedy that caused 228 fatalities and three missing people. This initiative, promoted jointly by elDiario.es and the Placemaking Europe foundation, aims to collect the needs and priorities of the public through surveys of the residents of the most punished areas.

The process will consist of two key meetings. Next April 30, at the headquarters of elDiario.es in Valencia (C/ de les Barques, 7, 46002), a focus group will be organized coordinated by the Valencian economist and urban planner Ramón Marrades. This session will bring together social leaders from the flooded areas, experts from the university and the CSIC, as well as business representatives, to complement the results obtained through citizen surveys.

On May 7, the debate will move to Florida Educational Group in Catarroja (Av. de València, 18, 46470), one of the cooperative centers affected by the floods. In this framework, the event "Innovation for recovery. Reconstructing Valencia after the DANA floods" will be held, which will have the participation of international experts, Valencian specialists and political leaders of the affected municipalities and the Government of Spain. The event will serve to share own experiences and those of other territories that have faced similar situations.

Pau Rausell, director of Econcult, will intervene on this last day to analyze the impact of the catastrophe on the Valencian cultural sector and propose recovery strategies that integrate culture as a fundamental axis of social and economic reconstruction. Its contribution will focus on the need to develop specific instruments for the reactivation of cultural facilities and the creative industries affected. The table will also have the participation of John Romero (Professor emeritus of the UV), who will address the challenges of post-disaster territorial planning, Paco Alós (Director of CSR of Caixa Popular), with a view on the role of the private sector in the reconstruction and Hans Karssenberg (STIPO/Placemaking Europe), which will share international experiences in territorial transformation.

Once the entire process has been completed, which includes citizen surveys, focus groups and technical workshops, elDiario.es will make public the conclusions of this extensive exercise of citizen participation and expert advice. The results will be offered both to media partners and to society in general, with the aim of orienting public reconstruction policies towards a more resilient model adapted to the real needs of the territory.
