Research on the temporal politics shaping the four-day workweek debate.
Joan Sanchis and Sofía Cruz took part in the 9th Annual Meeting of Political Economy, held in Porto (Portugal), with a presentation based on their contribution to the academic debate on the temporal politics of the four-day workweek proposal. The event brought together researchers from different countries and provided a space to share and discuss recent work related to transformations in labour and public policy.
Their contribution was framed within a collaborative piece of research exploring the political and temporal dimensions of working-time reduction, with particular attention to the narratives and political frameworks shaping the public and academic debate around this proposal.
The presentation enabled exchanges with other participants and helped highlight the relevance of this research agenda in the current context of labour reforms and renewed discussions on working time.
Joan Sanchis Muñoz, a member of Econcult, has developed doctoral research entitled “Transforming Work-Time Reduction Ideas: Advocacy Coalitions and Four-Day Work-Week Public Policies in Spain, Portugal, and the UK”, offering a comparative analysis of public policies aimed at reducing working time in Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, with a special focus on four-day workweek proposals.
One of the study’s key contributions is the role of the right to time as a central axis of this emerging debate, with relevant implications for how increased free time may affect the activities of the cultural and creative sectors.
