Pau Rausell Köster, director of the Research Unit in Economics of Culture and Tourism at the University of Valencia, is interviewed for more than 30 minutes about cultural policy and the @MESOCproject on Valencian public television in the "Noticies del Matí".
In this interview Pau Rausell highlights the value of culture and the relevance of the cultural sector to face the problems of the 21st century. Thus, he highlights culture as a place with high capacities to make the rest of the systems more efficient. According to Rausell, the application of cultural innovation is fundamental to innovate in the health or educational system. In his words we note that "Culture is an antibiotic in many respects. It is time to use these capabilities to solve many current problems".
This reflection is key and drinks of the idea that the own Rausell comments to the interview. The root problem is the failure to overcome the paradigm of cultural democratization as the prevailing paradigm in cultural policies. Thus, the doctor in economics showed the problems of this current of cultural policies and proposed innovation and creativity, as well as the incorporation of the cultural sector in other systems as those central to cultural policies.
One of the aspects to highlight in the city of Valencia is the situation of tourism. The campaigns of the best city to live in have increased the rent and the price of housing. Therefore, the debate on tourism policy has also been key. In this sense Pau Rausell, defended in the interview that we must focus on cultural development because tourism doubles the tourist generation, but we do not have to attract tourists to make culture, because in his words: "The cultural generation doubles the tourist generation [...] To make culture sometimes tourists are needed, but not vice versa".
Investment in culture not only has an impact on health, education and tourism. It also has an impact on electoral cycles. A number of studies carried out by Econcult show that investment in culture generates greater options for electoral gains. Even so, he emphasizes that cultural policy "has aged badly".
All this shows the relevance of the MESOC project. A project that has proposed innovative and original tools to measure the social value and impact of culture and cultural policies and practices. In consconància, the participation of Pau Rausell in the Valencian public television is an analysis of the Valencian cultural current affairs through the MESOC project that is currently launching a survey to test the pilot projects of MESOC.
