This publication, coordinated by Inmaculada Aguilar Civera, and titled Luces y faros del Mediterráneo. Lights and Lighthoses of the Mediterranean. Landscape, Techniques, Art and Society. From Torrevieja to Vinaròs, introduces us to the different and varied aspects of lighthouses throughout history: the antecedents in the mythical lighthouse of Alexandria or in the Roman testimonies and vestiges of the Tower of Hercules, in La Coruña; the construction process of the lighthouses, initiated with the lighting of the Tabarca lighthouse exactly 160 years ago; the technology that had in La Maquinista Valenciana, a leading company in the 20th century; the social environment of the lighthouses, the trades and the endearing and isolated figure of the torrer de fars (lighthouse keeper); the numerous legends, graphic and literary images that configure the lighthouse as an accumulator of cultural and symbolic meanings; its relationship with the new port infrastructures, adapting to their development and field of action; or its role in the Valencian cultural landscape as unique and strategic landmarks that are linked to the land, the port space and the urban environment.
