The publication of "La Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España: estructura empresarial y gestión contable (1900-1923)", by the 18th Demetrio Ribes Award winner, Miguel Ángel Villacorta Hernández, focuses on the most important areas of the economic discipline in the territory formation from its birth in the 19th century: railway. The Spanish railway sector has been throroughly studied for its relevant role in the economic progress and the territory vertebration. However, the organisation, management and accounting of railway companies has been left aside, something strange given the sector's contribution to the organisation, business and accounting sciences. This study on the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España (NORTE), which became the most important company in Spain and the tenth in Europe, aims to analyse the accounting information from an amount and quality perspective, as well as the organisation structure from different points of view dynamically. The analysis goes through the whole lifetime of the company, but focuses economically on the first quarter of the 20th century, its golden era and because finance data manipulation practices unknown until now have been identified.

The publication of the book 'Un siglo de transporte urbano en Castellón: Historia del transporte público en la capital de la Plana' (A century of public transport in Castellón: History of public transport in Castellón de la Plana), by Pablo Marco Dols, winner of the 19th edition of the Demetrio Ribes Award, addresses a very relevant question on the configuration of the territory: public transport in the city and between the city and its neighbour regions. The book analyses the creation and evolution of public transport in Castellón de la Plana and its maritime district since the installation of the first steam tram until today, including the companies which have managed it through the years and the salvaged heritage. The evolution of transport had, and has, a great influence in urban development. Transport and urban growth have influence each other, thus the study of the evolution of mobility in Castellón de la Plana is essential for the analysis of the historical growth of the city and its current configuration. Today as in the past, public transport is key for urban mobility, in addition to be a fundamental element for transforming the cities in kinder spaces. Its analysis will allow development in stablishing plans to favour a more sustainable urban mobility, as well as affect the growth of the city.

Unborn Section of Teruel-Alcañiz

The publication of 'La arquitectura de las estaciones intermedias de ferrocarril: la sección non nata del Teruel-Alcañiz', by Pedro Verdejo Gimeno, won the 17th Edition of Demetrio Ribes Award.

The book awarded in this edition presents the case of the railway from Baeza to Saint Girons, a great transversal axis that crossed the Iberian Peninsula connecting France with the port of Algeciras and that, after years of work and vicissitudes, would never be put into operation.

The aim of the research is to promote and disseminate the architecture of intermediate railway stations as identifiable pieces of our railway history. We have taken as witnesses the existing buildings on the ‘non nata’ railway line that runs between the towns from Teruel to Alcañiz.

In their buildings, as well as responding to new approaches that break with the previously executed railway architecture, they are configured as a lamp of experimentation among a varied range of materials produced by industry, in coexistence with traditional techniques and materials.

The synthesis of the research takes the form of a catalogue which, in a legible and orderly manner, provides a complete and identifiable view of the entire group of buildings in number and extension, indicating their location, characteristics and state of conservation.

This publication won the 16th Edition of Demetrio Ribes Research Award in November 2020.

The award-winning text Water and thermal functionality of Roman thermal complexes. Las Termas mayores de Mura in Llíria (Valencia), by Santiago Tormo Esteve, presents the thermal baths of ancient Edeta (Llíria), one of the largest and most unique Valencian examples of the expertise of Roman engineers and architects.

The wisdom with which they designed the entrances to the ovens, the materials chosen for the transmission of heat inside the rooms, the complex hydraulic network that allows the hot and cold water to enter and exit. A whole compendium where the four elements, fire, water, air and earth, are mixed with the architectural designs in the most efficient way to make the most of the functionality of buildings created to accommodate the population in their time of relaxation.

The book uses computational engineering to explain the actual functioning of the building. It concludes with the hypotheses of materials, the ducts through which the air circulates, the design of the shapes of the rooms and the dynamics of the start-up, elements that define it as one of the most important thermal examples of Roman Hispania.

The winning book aims to present the railway tramway progress in national territory in an innovative perspective of mathematics and topology. Its original application is the main focus of the study along with the discourse of the author and its visual repetoire, which conform a new refence in the research field of railway tramway system evolution.

Aqueduct Arcades

This publication, awarded with the 14th Demetrio Ribes Research Award, is an interesting work which delves into the study of water allocation for city and irrigation supply in the Valencian Community, whose rational and sustainable planning of the water resources has been an essential constant in the future of the Valencian territory and a key piece in the developing of its personal identity. Of its study we deduce an evolutionary analysis of the social, economic and politic organisation active in each period. If every public work serves for developing the landscape, this characteristic increases when the water infrastructures in general are involved and specially to the aqueduct arcades.

The author has faced the study of the aqueduct arcades from two points of view: through a chronologic classification of the arcades and carrying on a graphic comparative analysis, which intends to preserve the hydraulic heritage, witness of the technical, cultural and socioeconomic history of a territory which has always been related to water culture.

Founded in 1776, the society intervened in agriculture, commerce, industry and sociocultural progress, as well as territory research and urban planification as public administration advisors ands promoting projects like one of the most important map of the Valencian carthographic legacy- These and the associate documents served as source for the author to introduce us to the contribution of this society for the Valencian urban structure.

The publication of 'Obra pública y modernidad. Primeras aplicaciones del hierro en los puentes españoles (1815-1846)', by Alfonso Luján Díaz, is the resolution of the 10th Edition Demetrio Ribes Reseach Prize in June 2014.

Throughout the text, the author reflects on the concept of modernity, which started with the iron as construction material and its application in bridges and roads. This publication offers an inedit look at modernity from the 30s and the analysis of the first iron application in Spanish bridge construction.
