Abstract:
The publication of the book ‘Paseando por vías y caminos. Planes, infraestructuras y arquitectura. Russafa desde 1777’ (Walking on roads and paths. Plans, infrastructures and architecture. Russafa since 1777), the author of which is the architect César Jiménez Alcañiz, is the result of the resolution, June 2015, of the 11th Call of the Demetrio Ribes Research Award. The text reflects on the development and growth of Russafa as a village and neighbourhood of Valencia. Is the story of these two city centres. A story of coexistence and interactions which turns more obvious when in 1877, Russafa becomes an annex to Valencia and becomes one of the most important neighbourhoods of the outskirts of the capital.

The author addresses this analysis from different fields: urban planning, architecture, construction, transport and communications. The expansion planning of the cities is the theoretical base to define the conceptual changes which, during a century and a half, make the structure and organisation of the urban shape, keeping in mind the interactions caused by the incorporation of new transport systems such as the railway. The study of the architectonic and structural characteristics of Russafa is unique since the 19th century until today, where vestiges and witnesses of its past constitute a rich patrimonial legacy. For its future, the author presents a methodology to analyse the refurbishment, augmenting the environmental, residential and patrimonial quality and the sustainability.
