The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universitat de València

Beatriz Fernández Aucejo, conductor

The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universitat de València (OFUV) was created in 1995 to provide a response and cohesion to the diverse offers of instrumental groups formed by students. It has a staff of 80 young musicians, mostly university students, the average age of which is 20 years. Its aim is to provide high quality training in orchestral performance, with specialised teachers for each of the instrumental families. In addition, it should be noted that its activity is carried out in a stable manner with two weekly rehearsals throughout the academic year, which allows it to tackle with solvency a repertoire of great difficulty and projection.

Its repertoire includes Eclairs sur l'au-delà by Messiaen, Háry János by Kodály, Petrouchka, L'Oiseau de feu and Le Sacre du printemps by Stravinsky, El sombrero de tres picos de Falla, Symphony number 9 by Dvorak, Tableaux d’une exposition by Mussorgski, Daphnis et Chloé by Ravel, The Planets by Holst, Scheherezade by Rimsky-Korsakov, Messa da Requiem by Verdi, Symphony no. 4 by Brahms, Symphony no. 5 by Shostakovich, Symphony no. 2 by Rachmaninov, Fantastic Symphony by Berlioz and so on.

The main piece of the programme for the year 2019-2020 will be the Symphony no. 12 op. 112 of Dmitri Shostakóvich.

Throughout the almost twenty-five years of history, more than a thousand young musicians have passed through the OFUV. Many of them now perform in Spanish and European orchestras or teach in different professional and higher conservatories. In addition, the OFUV, in collaboration with the Aula de Música of the Vice-rectorate of Culture and Sports of the Universitat de València, is developing a cycle of recitals and chamber concerts in different centres of the Universitat, which enriches the training of its members in the interpretation of this type of repertoire.

The OFUV performs regularly in the Palau de la Música in Valencia and in the Auditorium of Zaragoza and has given numerous concerts in halls and across Spain and Europe, such as the Palacio de las Artes Reina Sofía in Valencia, the Auditorium in Barcelona, the Auditorium in León, the Academia Philharmonicorum in Ljubljana, the Austria Center Vienna or the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 1998, it participated in the XXVII edition of the International Contest of Young Orchestras held in Vienna (Austria), where it won the first prize in the category of symphony orchestras.

The OFUV is a member of the European Network of University Orchestras (ENUO). Thanks to its impulse, SINERGIA (Red de Orquestas Universitarias Españolas), of which it is a member, is created in 2015. In addition, the Taller de Luthería Sergi Martí collaborates in the maintenance and care of its stringed instruments. The activities of the OFUV are carried out with the sponsorship of the Area of Musical Activities of the General Foundation of the Universitat de València and the Santander.
