Before moving to Spain

What permits or visas do I need?

If you are an EU citizen, you will need:

  1. NIE (Foreigner Identity Number).
  2. Digital certificate.
  3. Social Security number.

In addition, if you are planning to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you must apply for the European Union Citizen Registration Certificate.

Applying for a NIE (Spanish Tax Identification Number for Foreigners)

You may apply for the NIE either at the Spanish Consulate in your place of residence or in Spain.

If you apply for a NIE from outside Spain, the allocation is not immediate, it may take 3 to 4 weeks. We recommend that you request information from the Spanish consulate.

In Spain, you can apply for a NIE by requesting an appointment at any national police station that handles immigration procedures. The HR Service at the university will issue a pre-contract to ease the process.

To pay the fee, you must fill in this form and tick the box "asignación de NIE" in the section "documentos de identidad".

 

Electronic Certificate

Once you have the NIE, you should apply for a digital certificate to be able to sign documents digitally in Spain (you will need it to sign your employment contract) and to carry out other administrative procedures electronically.

In your country of residence: you can apply for it at a Spanish Consulate.
In Spain: there are several places to apply for it. At the UV itself you can easily process it, both in the General Registry (by appointment) and in the auxiliary registers of the centres.

 

Social Security Number

You can apply for a SSN by clicking on the following link, using your digital certificate: https://go.uv.es/1GFLIED. The number is allocated instantly. 

 

Applying for a European Health Insurance Card

This card allows access to medical services for people from the European Economic Area and Switzerland. The people holding this card will receive the same medical care as Spanish residents. For more information and details on how to apply for it, visit the following website.

Applying for a TIE (Foreigner ID Card)

If you are not an EU citizen, you must apply for the TIE within 1 month of entering Spain. *Remember that it is compulsory to apply for the TIE if your stay is longer than 180 days.
In Valencia, non-EU citizens must apply for the TIE at the Patraix Police Station (C/ Dels Gremis, 6. Valencia). You must request an appointment for "Policía toma de huellas-expedición de tarjetas y renovación de tarjetas de larga duración".  
If you apply for the TIE that includes a residence permit under the law 14/2013, on entrepreneurs, you must download the application form.

EU Citizen Registration Certificate


If you are a EU citizen and your stay in Spain is longer than 90 days, you must apply for the European Union Citizen Registration Certificate. 

In Valencia,EU citizens can apply for certificate at the Police Station on Calle Bailén (C/Bailén, 9. Valencia). You must request an appointment first. More information.

NOTE: if you already live in Spain but do not have a NIE, you can apply for the EU Citizen Registration Certificate and obtain the NIE at the same time.

Registration of residency

In Spain, it is mandatory for every person to be registered in the Padrón of the municipality in which they currently reside. Manage your registration in the municipality of Valencia here.

If you reside in another municipality, you must contact the corresponding city council.

Taxes

In Spain, the Tax Agency is the entity responsible for everything related to taxation and taxes. Check their website if you have any doubts about your tax situation. You can also request an appointment with a specialist if you need a more personalized attention.

Registration in the electoral roll of foreign residents

EU citizens have the right to vote in Spain, both in municipal and European elections. Find out more about how to proceed to register and to know what requirements you must meet.

 
Living in Valencia

Public transport

The university extends throughout the city of Valencia and its metropolitan area on three campuses: the campus linked by Blasco Ibáñez Avenue, the Tarongers campus and the Burjassot-Paterna campus.

Three campuses linked by the underground and tram and home to numerous research institutes, eighteen faculties and the School of Engineering are what make up the Universitat de Valencia today. 

Blasco Ibáñez Campus

Located in Blasco Ibáñez Avenue in Valencia, this Campus includes the Office of the Principal and the Central Services of the University Avenue, as well as the University Odontological Clinic, the Lluís Vives Hall of Residence, the Joan Reglà Humanities Library, the Health Sciences Pelegrí Casanova Library, the Psychology and Sports Library, the Sports Campus and the following Faculties: Faculty of Nursing and Chiropody, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Faculty of Geography and History, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences, Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication, Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, and the Faculty of Physiotherapy.

Burjassot - Paterna Campus

Located in the municipal districts of Burjassot and Paterna, this Campus is connected to the other university campuses by the tram network and consists of the following faculties: Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Pharmacy and the School of Engineering.

  • EMT Buses: 63
  • Tram: line 4; stops: "Campus de Burjassot", "V. Andrés Estellés" , "TVV" (if you're going to the ETSE) and "Santa Gemma - Parc Científic UV" (Zone B)
  • Underground + municipal bicycle : line 1 till "Empalme" underground stop and then link with the Mibisi municipal bicycle system.

Tarongers Campus

This is the most recent campus of the University, built around the Ramon Llull and Tarongers avenues in Valencia.
Located on this campus are the Faculties of Law, Economics, Social Sciences and Education Sciences.

Accommodation

 

 

 

Valencia is a welcoming city with a long historical and cultural tradition going back many centuries. It is both a modern and intellectually stimulating city. Living here can be a very positive experience for everyone, children, young people and adults. There are many opportunities to find accommodation in Valencia at very reasonable prices. The Universitat de València offers the entire university community a number of halls of residence located very close to or integrated within the campuses.

Halls of Residence owned by the University

Halls of Residence are university centres that provide accommodation, namely for members of the university community, and that promote human, cultural and scientific training for its residents. University residences are either either owned by or affiliated with the university. The two halls of residence owned by the University are the "Lluís Vives" Hall of Residence (closed for renovations) and the "Rector Peset" Hall of Residence.

Driving a car

 

If you intend to drive a motor vehicle in Spain, you should find out about the validity of your driving licence and the procedures you need to carry out to either renew it or apply for a new one if necessary. Similarly, you should be aware of the regulations that apply if you wish to import your vehicle from abroad to drive it in Spain. The official body in charge of processing all these formalities and providing reliable and up-to-date information is the Dirección General de Tráfico (Traffic Department). Check their website for information and to make an appointment if necessary.

Opening a bank account

Once in Spain, you will most likely need to open a bank account. You will find branches of several banks throughout the city. If you are an EU citizen, you can open an account by going to the branch of the bank of your choice with your ID card from your country of origin or with your passport and the EU Citizen Registration Certificate. If you are not an EU citizen, you can also open an account, but in this case you must present either your Foreigner's Identification Card (TIE) or your valid passport.

At the University

Contract signature and associated documentation

Once the selection process is completed, the selected person will be contacted from the Human Resources PAS (administration and services staff) or PDI (teaching and research staff) to request the necessary documentation for the conclusion of the contract:

  • Justification and possession of qualifications and merits requested in the call with a certified copy. 
  • Homologation application or equivalent of official academic degrees, only in the case of having degrees from educational systems outside of Spain, even if they belong to a member country of the European Union.

Communication with HR and Social Security

Any communication with the PTGAS Investigation Human Resources Service, requesting information, help, certification, university card, etc., will be made through the UV ticketing tool:

In case of Temporary Disability, Work Accident or Occupational Illness, Materinity Leave and Child Care, etc. All information is available in the Social Security section.

Finally, we would like to remind you that you must take the corresponding vacation before the end of your contract. For queries related to this issue you should contact the person in charge of GDH management for your department/centre.

 

 

UV Email Address

Upon signing the contract with the university, a UV email address will be asigned to you. This will be the official email address for any interaction with the UV. In addition, you will use your user name and password to access all UV services and applications.

Student card

The university offers the possibility of having a dedicated ID card. It is useful for accessing its facilities and requesting books, journals or any other material on lloan from University libraries. You will receive instructions from HR on how to obtain such card.

The human resources department will provide you with instructions to obtain this card.

The university offers a wide range of IT services to the entire university community. On the website of the IT service you can find all the information you need to access and implement services such as:
