Each modality and each player require a type of protection within a large range of allowed materials, depending on the weight and hardness of the pilota, sensibility, playstyle and comfort. The singularity of pilota led to the lack of a standard protection for all players.
The main materials in professional and elite leagues are:
- Leather glove, the main protection equipment. It protects the palm while leaving the fingers out.
- Double-sided tape to fix the palm and fingers to the protections.
- 'Tessamol' is adhessive foam to kill the impact.
- Cards (naipes), properly cut and bent.
- Plantxetes are tiny iron pieces to adapt to the pilotari fingers and hand shape.
- Thimbles are only used in raspall to protects the hand against the friction of the 'raspada'.
- Tape is used to hold all the elements together.
Most of these materials share a history of being handmade, some of them still are and their secret elaboration is passed from parents to children.
