What type of exam is the Oxford Test of English?
The Oxford Test of English: It is a fully digital exam that consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The questions are created according to the test taker's level of proficiency, which means that the questions may vary depending on the candidate's performance.
When will the results be published?
You'll receive your results by email within 14 days, but it usually doesn't take more than a week. For a complete understanding of the result, you can refer to the "Understanding Results" help guide.
How is the exam structured?
The Oxford Test of English is structured into four main sections that assess different language skills. Here is a summary of the exam structure:
1. Listening:
- Length: approximately 25–30 minutes.
- Description: In this section, candidates listen to a series of audio recordings including conversations, monologues, and speeches. Afterwards, they must answer questions related to the information they heard. Questions can be multiple choice, true/false, or fill in the blank.
- Skills assessed: Listening comprehension, ability to extract specific and general information, understanding of implicit details.
2. Reading:
- Length: approximately 35–40 minutes.
- Description: In this section, candidates read a series of texts, which may include articles, emails, letters, instructions, etc. They then answer questions related to the content of the texts. Questions can be multiple choice, true/false/not mentioned, fill in the blank, among others.
- Skills assessed: Reading comprehension, ability to identify specific information, comprehension of main ideas and details.
3. Writing:
- Length: Approximately 45 minutes.
- Description: In this section, candidates must write texts in response to a series of instructions or given situations. Types of writing can include essays, emails, letters, reviews, and more. The ability to express oneself clearly and coherently is assessed using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
- Skills assessed: Written expression, ability to structure and organize ideas, appropriate use of vocabulary and grammar.
4. Speaking:
- Length: Approximately 14–18 minutes.
- Description: In this section, candidates participate in a series of speaking activities. These may include describing pictures, giving opinions on specific topics, participating in simulated dialogues with the examiner, among others. The ability to communicate orally in a clear, consistent, and accurate manner is assessed.
- Skills assessed: Oral expression, fluency, pronunciation, comprehension, and adequate response to questions and tasks.
- It is important to note that the Oxford Test of English is conducted entirely online and that the questions are personalized to the test taker's level of proficiency, which means that the difficulty may vary depending on the candidate's performance throughout the exam.
Do Oxford exam pass certificates expire?
Oxford Test of English passing certificates do not expire. Once you have completed and passed the exam, you will receive a certificate showing your level of proficiency in English. This certificate does not have an expiration date and will remain valid over time. However, it is important to note that some educational institutions or employers may prefer more recent certificates to assess your current level of English. In that case, you may be asked to retake the exam to update your certificate.
Is the exam face-to-face?
Yes, it takes place completely online on the premises of the Centre d'Idiomes and lasts approximately two hours.
How long is the exam?
About 2 hours.
Is it possible to take only one part of the exam or do I have to take all parts?
It is possible to take only one or more parts of the Oxford Test of English. Each section assesses specific language skills, so you can choose to take only the part you need or want to certify.
For example, if you are only interested in earning an oral comprehension and written expression certification, you may choose to take only those two sections of the exam. However, please note that you will receive a grade for each individual section you complete, and not an overall English level grade if you only take some parts of the exam.
Is it necessary to have a previous level certificate to be able to present yourself to the next level?
It is not necessary to have a previous accredited (certified) level to be able to present yourself at a higher one. However, it may be advisable to go up level by level through the exams, as you complete your English courses within the training offer at the Centre d'Idiomes at the University of Valencia.
Is there a minimum age to take the exam?
All exams will require applicants to be at least 16 years old (there are exams for young people between 12 and 16 years old: Oxford Test of English for Schools).
What if I am dissatisfied with my score?
If you believe that there have been any errors in the evaluation, it is possible to request a review of the results. Please check with the centre for fees for revisions. A review of results will not result in a score lower than that achieved on the original test being awarded.
Are there provisions for students with disabilities offered at the Oxford Test of English certification exams?
Yes, the Oxford Test of English offers some adaptation measures in the case of special needs. Contact the centre for more information.
How valid are the OXFORD TEST OF ENGLISH tests?
The Oxford Test of English accreditation tests are recognised by the Universitat de València according to the agreement 156/2018, of 10 July, approved by the Governing Council.

What’s the difference between Oxford Test of English and Oxford Test of English Advanced?
Oxford Test of English assesses A2–B2 levels of the CEFR while Oxford Test of English Advanced assesses B2–C1 levels of the CEFR.
