From the 15 to the 19 September 2025, in the Assembly Hall of the ‘Eduard Boscà’ Science Library, will take place at 12 the cycle of conferences of the welcome week.

 

Monday 15: Lluis Montoliu. La gènetica que van aprendre al cinema.

This talk is focused on the dissemination that cinema has done or genetics, which has inspired well known titles such as “The boys from Brazil” (Michael Schaffner, 1978), “Jurassic Park” (Steven Spielberg, 1993), “GATTACA” (Andrew Niccol, 1997) y “The Island” (Michael Bay, 2005).

Lluís Montoliu (Barcelona 1963). Graduated and doctor in Biology through the University of Barcelona. Scientific researcher of the CSIC and vice-dean of the National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB), researcher and member of the Comité de Dirección del Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Enfermedades Raras (CIBER-ER), of the ISCIII. Honorary professor of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid for 20 years (1998-2018) and honorary professor of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 2021. He is the director of the Spanish Node European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA) (EMMA-Infrafrontier) from 2007. Award winner of the SINC Agency (2018), Award winner of the COSCE of dissemination of science (2022), among others.

In his laboratory he researches basic topics (how genomes are organised) and applied topics (animal models for the study of rare diseases, such as albinism).

Tuesday 16: Mª Josep Picó. Quan la natura es fake.

This talk will deal with the fake narrative and the manipulation that can happen in such sensitive topics such as climate change or global warming.

Mª Josep Picó (Sagunto 1973), is graduated in Data Sciences through the Cardenal Herrera-CEU and doctor through the Universitat de València. Assistant Lecturer and Ph.D. of the Journalism field of the Department of Language Theories and Communication Sciences of the Universitat de València. She leads the radio of the Facultat de Filologia, Traducció i Comunicació, Espai Pòdcast UV.

Associated researcher in the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3). Among her recognitions stands out the Environment National Award 2005, given by the Ministry of Environment.

Thursday 18: Francis Mójica. De la Facultat al CRISPR.

In this talk Francis Mójica, ex-student of our Faculty, will talk about CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), technology of genetic edition that works cutting and modifying DNA precisely.

Francisco Martínez Mójica (Elche, 1963). Graduated in Biology through the Universitat de València and Doctor through the Universidad de Alicante and the Université Paris-Sud. Microbiologist and researcher mainly known for his contributions that described the repeated CRISPR sequences in arches and its role in the mechanisms of immunity in prokaryotes.

Rey Jaime I Award in 2016 to basic research, BBVA Foundation Award Frontiers of Knowledge in the category of Biomedicine (2016), Alberto Sols Award (2017) and Albany Medical Centre Award (2017) among others.

In 2024 he was named member of the European Academy, one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in Europe.

Friday 19: Juan Luis Arsuaga. Un problema sin resolver de la Biología.

In the conference the enigma: ¿Serás capaz de resolverlo? Will be dealt.

Juan Luis Arsuaga (Madrid, 1954). Graduated in Biology and doctor through the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Co-director of the Team of researchers of the underground sites of Atapuerca, and director of Human Evolution of Burgos. 

Cover of the magazine Nature (8 April, 1993) for the article about the discovery in 1992, of the most complete human cranium of the fossil register of Humanity, cranium number 5 of a specimen of Homo heideldbergensis.

In 2021 was accredited by his SS MM the Kings of Spain as Honorary Ambassador of the Spanish Brand in the category of Science and Innovation.

He is also member of the National Academy of Sciences of United States, of the Real Academy of Doctors of Spain, of the Musée de l'Homme of Paris, of the international association for the study of Human Palaeontology or vice-president of the commission of Human Palaeontology and Paleoecology of the INQUA (International Union for Quaternary Research).
