British traditions for Autumn

Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year. The air feels fresh in the mornings, the leaves start turning brilliant shades of red and orange and it’s cool enough to wrap up in the evenings.

With the start of the new academic year, for many people, autumn is also a time to think about goals and plans, maybe take up a new hobby or enjoy discovering new places. So, whether you already have your own autumn traditions or would like to try some new ones, here are a few typical things about autumn in the UK.

WALKS IN THE FOREST

The UK is full of stunning parks and forests where you can see the trees changing colour and enjoy the autumn colours. It’s a great way to enjoy time with family and friends and the sound of leaves crunching beneath my feet always brings back childhood memories of jumping into piles of leaves! It’s a wonderful time to enjoy being outside and really make the most of nature.

PUMPKIN PICKING AND CARVING

Autumn is also the typical time for pumpkin picking and many farms open their doors for people to come and pick their own from their pumpkin patches. It’s an event for all the family there are often other fun activities on offer too. After picking your pumpkins, it's time to get ready for Halloween by carving them. From traditional Jack o’Lantern faces to fun and creative patterns, you’re sure to see many spooky designs!

HARVEST

Harvest is a time to collect crops and give thanks for the food grown. It dates back to the harvest supper after the harvest was collected at the end of September and beginning of October. Nowadays, people celebrate by bringing food and celebrating a meal with family and friends and there are harvest festivals in some towns and villages. As well as pumpkins, people often enjoy picking other seasonal fruit, such as wild blackberries and apples, and there are plenty of events in farms and orchards around the country.

Alguns dels favorits al Regne Unit són la xocolata calenta amb malví torrats, les abundants sopes i guisats de carbassa, així com els pastissos de fruites amb pomes i móres.

AUTUMN FOOD AND DRINKS

As the weather gets colder, it’s the perfect time to start making warm, comforting dishes. Some favourites in the UK are hot chocolate with toasted marshmallows, hearty pumpkin soups and stews as well as fruit pies using autumn apples and blackberries.

CREATING A COSY ATMOSPHERE

All in all, autumn is a time to enjoy the changing of the seasons and cooler weather. Many people do this by creating a warm atmosphere in their homes, making autumn decorations and spending time together.
