Work Group SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS

The University of Valencia (UV) is committed to making sustainability a guiding principle and a fundamental value for the university community. This axis will promote cross-cutting actions to raise awareness and foster new alliances to promote the alignment of the UV's strategic planning with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, the 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy and the EU's Mechanisms for a Just Transition (2021-27). Tjhe University of Valencia is playing an active role in the multidimensional transformation needed to achieve progress in the sustainability of governance, teaching, research and management of the entire university community.

The scientific community recognizes university institutions as essential agents of change to move towards sustainable development, considering their vital role in teaching-learning and research processes, critical reflection, and the development of innovative approaches and sustainable solutions. In parallel, the socio-economic role of the university community is key both within the UV and externally, in their roles as employers, consumers and public service for the establishment of partnerships. Ultimately contributing to the development of more sustainable ways of living on the planet.

The UV is strongly committed to the development of a global agenda towards sustainable development, in line with global, European and national commitments, with a special focus on the local level. Often located in the heart of cities, universities are key meeting places between the university and the urban community. In particular, the proposal to make Valencia a climate-neutral city by 2030 and the social and urban innovation policies that follow in the wake of the European Union's proposal for research and innovation until 2030, make alliances that promote sustainable communities based on the university-city binomial particularly relevant.

Advancing toward multidimensional sustainability for a life worth living requires a new social pact and a new development model in line with the principles of circular economy, which recognizes the interdependence between social, economic and environmental systems. In the context of the current climate emergency, we have an urgent call for new university governance that contributes to moving towards decarbonized, resilient, just and equitable societies.
