Sustainability in the university must necessarily include the sustainable use of resources to ensure the development of the University and its long-term continuity as an institution. Moreover, it should aim for the measures adopted within the university to have a positive effect on society as a whole, which is one of the main functions of the university.
In 2015, the United Nations defined a sustainable development agenda with 17 goals to be achieved in the next eight years. Therefore, there is very little time left and many challenges to overcome.
The University of Valencia has decided to commit to sustainability by increasing its resources to contribute to achieving these goals. There is little time left, but the circumstances are favorable for achieving them. The declaration of the city of Valencia as one of the 100 climate-neutral cities by the European Commission provides fertile ground for sustainability initiatives in all areas, as does European funding for sustainability and resilience.
This vice-rectorate aims to address several key areas: energy efficiency and mobility, waste management, fair and local trade, curricular sustainability, health, community awareness, and the promotion of new alliances. Therefore, the new sustainability team is composed of individuals with extensive experience and a high degree of commitment to the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
It is in our hands to achieve this. We count on all of you to carry out the initiatives in a participatory manner. Sustainability, along with integrity, will be the driving force that facilitates society’s progress towards a future that ensures the well-being of both the current inhabitants of Earth and those to come. We count on you.
