Gastrointestinal infections - INFECTGUT

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2016-272

Description of research activity:

The Gastrointestinal Infection Research Group of the Department of Microbiology and Ecology works in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and is linked to the Clinical Microbiology Service of the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia. Our main objective is to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms of infectious agents that produce gastrointestinal pathology, mainly viruses (rotavirus and norovirus), as well as the immune response caused by these infections. Rotavirus and norovirus produce gastroenteritis that affect children, although noroviruses can also infect people of any age, often causing epidemic outbreaks. We study the immunological mechanisms of protection against these infections, as well as the molecular determinants that condition susceptibility to them.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Estudio de los mecanismos patogenicos de rotavirus y norovirus
  • Estudio de la respuesta inmunitaria frente a rotavirus y norovirus
  • Estudio de las interacciones virus-hospedador

Research lines:
  • Pathogenesis and immune response to enteric viral infections: rotavirus and norovirus. The aim of this line of research is to study the pathogenic mechanisms and the immune response of infections by the two main enteric viruses (rotavirus and norovirus).
  • Molecular epidemiology of rotavirus and norovirus infections. This line of research focuses on the study of the epidemiology of rotavirus and norovirus through the application of molecular techniques (RT-PCR, qPCR, cDNA sequencing, etc.) and the detection of new variants of viral genotypes.
  • Study of virus / microbiota / host interactions. The aim of this line of research is to study the interactions that occur between enteric viruses and the host without excluding the interactions that occur between enteric viruses and the intestinal microbiota or the interaction between the intestinal microbiota and the host.
