Description of research activity:

Our research focuses on the psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery of people with long-term mental disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychoses and bipolar disorder. Over the last 20 years, we have worked on the clinical, neurocognitive, social cognition and social functioning assessment of this group of people with the aim of analysing the main deficits and implementing appropriate intervention programmes for the improvement of psychosocial functioning. These assessments and interventions aim to improve the process of psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery of people with these difficulties.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Estudiar el funcionamiento psicosocial de las personas con diagnostico de esquizofrenia, otras psicosis y trastorno bipolar.
  • Evaluar las areas que se ven afectadas en estos trastornos como la clinica, la neurocognitiva y de cognicion social.
  • Realizar de programas de intervencion en rehabilitacion psicosocial y recuperacion.
  • Analisis y mejora (disminucion) de los procesos de estigmatizacion asociados en poblacion general y en los propios pacientes/usuarios (autoestigma).
  • Estudio de las diferencias de genero y analisis de las consecuencias que estas pueden tener en las intervenciones que se realizan.
 
Research lines:
  • Psychosocial functioning in psychotic and affective disorders.To study the psychosocial functioning of people diagnosed with schizophrenia, other psychoses and bipolar disorder, at different points in the development of these mental health issues.
  • Clinical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning assessment in Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder.To study the results of assessments in the areas affected in these disorders such as clinical, neurocognitive, social cognition (emotional processing, ToM, social cognition and attributional style) and their relationship with social functioning.
  • Psychological interventions in schizophrenia and other psychoses.Development and implementation of intervention programmes focused on the improvement of social skills, neurocognitive and social cognition training and psychoeducational programmes for the improvement of social functioning and quality of life from a recovery perspective.
  • Stigma associated with mental illness.Study of beliefs, attitudes and discrimination towards mental illness in the general population and their relationship with knowledge and contact or familiarity with mental illness.
  • Gender differences in schizophrenia and other psychoses.Study of the differences that occur in socio-demographic characteristics, as well as in clinical, neurocognitive, social cognition, social functioning, response to treatment, labour market integration, etc.
  • Neuroplasticity in psychotic and affective disorders.Study of the plasticity of the nervous system and the role played by genetic, biological and cognitive alterations in people with psychotic and affective disorders, in order to develop strategies to prevent and intervene in their functional impairment.
