Diabetes and associated complications - DIACOM

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2021-518

Description of research activity:
The group's research focuses on metabolic alterations, primarily diabetes and insulin resistance states, as well as the complications associated with these diseases. Diabetes is a very prevalent disease, associated with multiple chronic complications, both micro and macrovascular (cardiovascular disease), which implies a high morbidity and mortality in the population, as well as a very high social health costs. The mechanisms that contribute to the development of these complications are not fully known. The group has a translational purpose. It is made up of clinical and regular researchers. It consists of staff attached to the University of Valencia, the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia and the INCLIVA Biomedical Research Institute. Likewise, the research group has been part of the Biomedical Research Networking Centre in the area of Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM) since its beginnings in 2008. Within CIBERDEM, the group's activities have focused on two of its strategic lines: epidemiology, genetics and epigenetics of diabetes mellitus. Within CIBERDEM, the group's activities have focused on two of its strategic lines: epidemiology, genetics and epigenetics of diabetes mellitus. Chronic complications and comorbidities, and cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of type 2 diabetes and the identification of new therapeutic targets. The group's main lines of research are the following: diabetes, inflammation and arteriosclerosis; diabetes and fatty liver; pharmacogenetics and diabetes; diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers; genetic factors involved in the regulation of body mass index and abdominal obesity; insulin resistance, inflammation and oxidative stress; postprandial lipemia and arteriosclerosis in insulin resistance states; and neurocognitive degeneration and diabetes.
