Description of research activity:
The Oral Precancer and Cancer Research Group focuses on the study of premalignant lesions and oral cancer in their various forms of presentation in the oral cavity and on the identification and validation of new biomarkers used for the early diagnosis of oral cancer. To this end, we carried out longitudinal studies in patients with pre-cancer and oral cancer, analysing the most relevant risk factors and integrating them with omics studies from tissue samples obtained by biopsies and salivary samples, such as the search for epigenomic, transcriptomic (RNAseq) and metagenomic alterations between the different types of potentially malignant oral lesions, and in turn establishing their distinction with oral squamous cell carcinomas. In summary, we aim to know the factors that can help us, both clinically and biomolecularly, in the early diagnosis of oral cancer. Scientific-technical goals:
  • 1. Comprobar que hallazgos clinicos e histologicos de las leucoplasias orales influiran mas a la hora de la posible transformacion maligna.
  • 2. Comprobar que tipos clinicos influyen mayormente en el desarrollo del cancer oral. Se miden por procedimientos matematicos informaticos.
  • 3. Investigar patrones epigeneticos en el precancer y cancer oral.
  • 4. Investigar patrones de RNAseq en el precancer y cancer oral.
  • 5. Constatar si existen alteraciones en metagenomica de estas lesiones comparado con grupos controles sanos.
 
Research lines:
  • Biomarkers in oral cancer and precancer.Our aim is to carry out clinical-pathological and biomolecular studies (methylation, RNAsea and metagenomics) with the main objective of obtaining a biomarker in saliva or in biopsy samples that is predictive of the malignant transformation of potentially malignant lesions and oral cancer.
