Two-dimensional materials chemistry lab - 2D-CHEM

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2022-525

Description of research activity:

2D-Chem is an interdisciplinary research group focused on the study of two-dimensional (2D) materials by combining inorganic and organic chemistry with materials science. Our group works in three main lines of research: 2D pnictogens (group of P, As, Sb and Bi), lamellar hydroxides and carbon nanoforms and related hybrid materials. Together with the synthesis and exhaustive characterisation of our materials, we aim to explore their novel applications in the fields of energy storage and conversion, catalysis, electronics and magnetism, among others. We have close links with other recognised scientific groups, both in national and international institutions, such as the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), ITQ-CSIC (Spain), the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain), IMDEA Nanoscience (Spain), the University of Vienna (Austria), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Hungary), the University of Strasbourg (France), the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and the University of Texas at El Paso (USA).

Scientific-technical goals:

Research lines:
  • 2D Materials. We carry out the synthesis and advanced characterisation of new two-dimensional materials beyond graphene for use in sectors such as energy storage and transformation, catalysis, biomedicine or (opto-)electronics.
  • Layered Hydroxides and hybrid materials. We synthesise materials based on lamellar hydroxides, as well as organic-inorganic hybrids and heterostructures.
  • Carbon nanoforms. We perform the synthesis, functionalisation, hybridisation and processing of carbonaceous nanomaterials such as graphene, nanotubes, nano-onions, quantum dots and nanocomposites for application in energy, catalysis, the environment or coatings.
