The Environmental Radioactivity group investigates low levels of radioactivity in the environment due to both natural and artificial isotopes. It also develops instrumentation for the measurement of environmental radioactivity for various matrices: air, water and soils. Air activity measurements are carried out by means of both high and low flow suction pumps, which incorporate filters that are subsequently measured with hyper-pure germanium detectors. It also performs airborne radon measurements with specific instrumentation. For measurements of radioactivity in water, it has liquid scintillation detectors with which alpha, beta and gamma activities are measured and proportional detectors for the measurement of alpha and beta activities. The general aim of LARAM is to carry out determinations of the environmental radioactive content, whether of natural or artificial origin, in a wide range of matrices and situations as well as to propose and implement remedial actions to reduce said radioactive contents. On 30/12/2011, the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC) granted LARAM an accreditation certificate as recognition of the technical competence to carry out tests in the...The Environmental Radioactivity group investigates low levels of radioactivity in the environment due to both natural and artificial isotopes. The general aim of LARAM is to carry out determinations of the environmental radioactive content, whether of natural or artificial origin, in a wide range of matrices and situations as well as to propose and implement remedial actions to reduce said radioactive contents. On 30/12/2011, the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC) granted LARAM an accreditation certificate as recognition of the technical competence to carry out tests in the environmental sector (inland waters and waters intended for human consumption), according to the UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 Standard.Among the activities related to environmental radiological surveillance in which LARAM participates and has participated, we can highlight: 1. The REM (Sampling Stations Network, Dense Network) programme. It is the result of an agreement with the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) to establish continuous environmental radiological surveillance in our country. 2. Quality Control of the Environmental Radiological Surveillance Programme (PVRA) of the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Plant. The LARAM participates in this Quality Control through an agreement signed with the Valencian Agency for Safety and Response to Emergencies (Regional Government of Valencia) and consists of the measurement of levels of radioactivity reached in various environmental matrices (air, drinking water, rain and groundwater, vegetation, animals) around the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Plant. The LARAM has continuously participated in the Quality Control of the PVRA since 1989. 3. Radiological Surveillance Programme in Emergencies within the same agreement held with the Valencian Agency for Security and Emergency Response (AVSRE). We participatee in the development of the Radiological Emergency Plan of the Valencian Community. We measure the existing background in the radioactive facilities of the Valencian Community, carry out simulations to design the actions to be taken in the event of a radiological emergency (fire, accident, attack) and develop instrumentation for intervention in radiological emergencies, which is tested in simulations. 4. Analysis of the radioactive content of water for human consumption (as required by Royal Decree 140/2003 of 7 February, which establishes the health criteria for the quality of water for human consumption). 5. Indoor Rn-222 concentration measurements. We are currently carrying out radon concentration analyses in work environments, in compliance with Royal Decree 1439/2010 (Article 63. Protection against exposure to terrestrial sources of natural radiation). 6. Development of radiation measurement instrumentation. Within the framework of the TRITIUM project, funded by the INTERREG-SUDOE programme, we have developed a monitor to measure low levels of tritium radioactivity in nuclear power plant wastewater. A prototype is installed in the Almaraz nuclear power plant (Cáceres). We also investigate the development of instrumentation for radon measurements. Metrological intercomparison. LARAM has participated in intercomparison exercises promoted by institutions such as the CIEMAT-CSN, IAEA, WHO, NHS and related laboratories.
