ORBITA is a group dedicated to translational research in visual health. We integrate preclinical and clinical research to accelerate the design, validation, and adoption of ophthalmic devices, including intraocular lenses, contact lenses, and artificial tears, among others. Our research lines cover cataract and refractive surgery, ocular surface and dry eye, advanced contactology, and non-invasive diagnostic techniques with image analysis and AI. We operate under GCP, conduct observational, usability, and performance studies, and generate clinical-regulatory evidence aligned with MDR/IVDR.
- Generate evidence of biocompatibility and clinical performance of ophthalmic medical devices
- Optimize interventions for presbyopia and myopia (surgery and contact lenses)
- Develop non-invasive anterior segment metrics and validate them clinically
- Transfer results to industry through contracts, consultancy, and GCP protocols
- Publish results and train research talent in the field of vision
- Cataract surgery and intraocular lens evaluation.Research on cataract surgery, ranging from biometric prediction and optical bench evaluation to the postoperative assessment of IOLs (monofocal, multifocal, EDOF). Safety, efficacy, visual quality, dysphotopsias, neuroadaptation, and patient satisfaction are analyzed.
- Ocular surface and dry eye.Study of tear dysfunctions and ocular inflammation. Clinical and technological evaluation of current and emerging therapies.
- Refractive surgery and functional visual outcomes.Research on procedures such as LASIK, SMILE, and ICL. Study of visual quality, aberrations, and postoperative visual perception.
- Advanced contact lenses.Development and clinical evaluation of therapeutic, multifocal, scleral contact lenses, and lenses for myopia progression control.
- Non-invasive diagnostic technologies and metrics.Design and validation of diagnostic tools for the anterior segment. Evaluation of their performance under real-world clinical conditions.
- Application of artificial intelligence in ocular imaging and diagnosis.Development and application of AI algorithms for analysis of ocular imaging and clinical decision-making. Applications in screening, monitoring, and prediction of therapeutic response.
