‘No Way Home’, by Shih Li, wins the Half-length Film Award La Cabina 2012

After ten intense sessions of half-length films and a 20% increase in the number of viewers compared to last year, the president of the jury, the film director Sigfrid Monleón, announced the winner of the 5th Edition during the closing ceremony celebrated last Sunday at the IVAM (Valencian Institute of Modern Art). The film ‘No Way Home’, by the Taiwanese Shih Li, won the Award for Best Half-length Film, whereas the film Blackstory, by Christoph and Stephan Brunner won the Audience Award.

The jury, formed by several filmmakers and film theorists such as Sigfrid Monleón, Álvaro Yebra, Cristian Guijarro, José Antonio Hurtado and Antonia del Rey, faced lengthy discussions due to, in words of Sigfrid Monleón, ‘the high quality of the films presented: a selection rich in styles and content, and diverse background’, until the Taiwanese film won the majority of votes.

No Way Home (Taiwan 2011), a 35 minutes drama, is a tribute to life, which always involves important decisions, for example, to stay or to leave; to wake up or stay asleep. Subtle and severe, the film tells the story of a woman who wakes up one morning with a clear wish: she never wants to return home, and she wanders through Taipei with the help of a taxi driver.

The Audience Award was added to this 5th Edition, by involving people who attended the sessions at the IVAM with their votes. Finally, the audience decided that the film noir of Blackstory (Denmark, 2011) was the worthy winner.

The jury of this 5th Edition decided to add another Award that was not scheduled: the Award for best Animated Half-length film. Sigfrid Monleón claimed ‘we created an Award for animated film because these films do not usually compete on equal terms with real fictional films and because all the animated half-length films presented, not only the winner, were interesting’. The Award was for the Czech comedy Reason and Luck (Rozum a Stesti, Czech Republic, 2011) by David Sukup.
