A total of 230 students of Biology of second year Batxillerat at public and private schools in the province of Valencia participate Friday, 15 February, in the exam of the regional stage of the 10th Biology Olympiad. The test, which is performed simultaneously in Alicante, Castellón and Valencia, has brought together 350 students from the Valencian Country. The exam, which will begin at 16:30, will be held in Valencia, at the Interfaculty Hall of the Burjassot-Paterna Campus of the University.
The exam will be anonymous and will consist of a test on the content of biology programs from first and second high school grade. It will consist of two parts: In the first one the student must answer 60 multiple choice questions, and it accounts for 60% of the final grade. In the second part, which accounts for 40% of the final grade, students must answer a series of questions related to a current biological-scientific text.
The evaluating academic committee of the Olympiad, consisting of professors of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, will determine the finalists and will propose the winners for the Biology Olympiad of Valencia.
The awards ceremony for the Biology Olympiad - Regional Stage is on 22 March at 17:30 at the Room Charles Darwin in the Interfaculty Hall of Burjassot-Paterna Campus.
This year, the National Stage will be held in Madrid from 7 to 10 March 2013. The top three ranking students from the local stages of their respective Autonomous Communities will participate in this stage
Of the participants in the National Phase, the top eight students selected will represent Spain in the international stage in 2013. These students will receive a week long specific training, including theoretical and practical classes, to participate in international stages.
The top four finalists will represent Spain at the 24th International Biology Olympiad to be held in July in Switzerland. The four runners-up will represent Spain in the 7th Iberoamerican Biology Olympiad to be held in September in Argentina.
