A Valencian obtains a gold medal in the Spanish Mathematical Olympiad.

The Valencian Damia Torres has obtained one of the six gold medals of the 50th edition of the Spanish Mathematical Olympiad at its national phase. Apart from Torres, Alejandro Martinez y Alejandro Martos have obtained two medals of silver and bronze, respectively. Thus, the team of the Valencian Community has won three out of the thirty-six medals of the Olympiad.

Damia Torres obtained in the same competition in 2012 the bronze medal for Santander and in 2013 the silver medal in the Bilbao edition. He has also obtained the first place in the State Olympiad of Chemistry and another one in the Local Olympiad of Physics, as well as other distinctions in national and international competitions.

Being the current winner of a gold medal, Damia Torres will take part along with the Spanish team in the International Olympiad of Mathematics (MO) which will be held in Cape Town, in the South-African Republic.

The awards presentation ceremony was held at the Municipal Theatre of Requena last Saturday, 29 March. The national phase of this competition has been held in Valencian lands for the fourth consecutive time. The choice of the city of Requena is an award to the constancy and the good work of the secondary school teachers of the two public centers of the city, represented by Antonio Ledesma, teacher of the number 1 secondary school and president of the Organizing Committee.

During the act, Young members of the Math Club of Requena, former contestants in the Open of Math and in the Olympiad from Requena and from the Valencian Community, revealed, among different musical performances, the winners’ names of the eighteen bronze medals, the twelve silver medals and the six gold medals.

Afonso Gonzalez Bell, who is the director of Evaluation and Territorial Cooperation of the MECyD, also took part in the ceremony; Javier Berasaluce, the Mayor of Requena; Antonio Campillo, president of the Royal Mathematical Spanish Society; and Jorge Hermosilla, the Vice-principal of Participation and Territorial Projection of the UV. The dean of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Rafael Crespo, was the person in charge to present the first gold medal.

The honor committee of the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Olympiad will be presided by H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias , who is honour president of the RSME (Royal Mathematical Spanish Society), the event will be also attended by the Principal of the UV and the UPV, among other academic personalities.
