
The former president of the European Commission, Joaquín Almunia and the former president of the National Committee for Competition and former Member of Parliament, Luis Berenguer, will open on next Tuesday 2 February in La Nau Cultural Centre, the dialog cycle ‘A dónde va Europa’ (Where is Europe going?), promoted by the Foundation Cañada Blanch in collaboration with Universitat de València and Le Monde Diplomatique in Spanish. The event will start at 19:00 in the Paranymph. Admission is free until full capacity and will be broadcasted live at en esta dirección.
This cycle, within the lines of the Cañada Blanch Chair of Contemporary Thinking, intends to promote research activities on social issues which are relevant because they are breaking news and they have cultural, political and economic interest. More specifically, these dialogs are part of the objective to create debate forums that enable the identification of subjects and problems that are specifically meaningful in the field of thinking, opening new dialog paths and also intellectual exchange.
Juan López-Trigo, president of the Cañada Blanch Foundation and the vice-principal of Culture and Equality of the Universitat, Antonio Ariño will present this cycle, while the managing director of the Spanish edition of Le Monde diplomatique, Ferran Montesa, will moderate the debate.
According to Juan López-Trigo: “The Cañada Blanch Chair of Contemporary Thinking is characterised because it is not only addressed to specialists, but also to all public interested in re-thinking our world and broaden their reference points”, and adds: “In this cycle, having the help of Le Monde diplomatique in Spanish and the continuous support of the Universitat de València made it possible to build a cycle that brings the people who are key to determine where Europe and us are going to Valencia”.
Joaquín Almunia was Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Union where he was vice-president of the European Commission with José Manuel Durao Barroso. He has also been European Commissioner of Competition and General Secretary of the PSOE. Among his studies the programme “Senior Managers in Government” in the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University.
Currently, Luis Berenguer develops his professional labour in Broseta Abogados but he was the first president of the National Committee for Competence, counsellor of Joan Lerma, president of the Competition Tribunal, member of the Committee of the Regions and Vice-president of the Cortes Generales.
The next dialogue of this cycle, which will take place on Tuesday 9 February, will be about the political and social challenges which Europe is facing. The debate will count with the interventions of José Mª de Areilza, general secretary of Spanish ASPEN Institute Foundation and José Ignacio Torreblanca, director of the office in Madrid of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
