Ana Márquez Aliaga, lecturer of paleontology at the geology department and head of the paleontology research team of Cavanilles University Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, has been appointed president of Sociedad Española de Paleontology (SEP). The appointment ceremony took place during the meeting which the society held after the XXVIII Jornadas de la SEP finished in Burjassot (Valencia) and Sóller (Mallorca) from 1st to 6th October.
ProgrammeLecturer Ana Márquez Aliaga got a PhD in geology sciences from Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1983, where she got an excellence mention due to her pioneer contributions to the paleontological knowledge of Triassic. She kept studying at the universities of Sofia in Bulgaria, Tübingen in Germany, and Yale in the USA. Nowadays, she collaborates with prestigious centres like CSIC, Universidad de la Plata (Argentina), the Nanjing’s institute for geology and paleontology, Universitat Central de Barcelona, Universidad de Granada, etc.
From 1999, she runs the research group -SWG- International Union Geological Science IUGS/UNESCO- related to the study of the Triassic period. Recently, she started to collaborate with the Museo de Geología de la Universitat de València, where she manages a project on computer paleontology.
SEP
SEP was officially created during the celebration of the I Jornadas de la SEP in Zaragoza in 1985. It is an organization devoted to the paleontology’s scientific dissemination in Spain. Among its main activities, there is the organization of a annual conference called Jornadas de Paleontología. It has almost 400 members and publishes the Spanish Palaeontological Journal. Among other works, it has edited the book Paleontología de Invertebrados (Martínez Chacón y Rivas, Eds, 2009).
