The Cinema Club of the University of Valencia presents in April a new series of films, ‘Cronopaisatge’. Titled like this in homage to the homonymous essential work written by Gregory Benford. From 2 to 30 April, every Wednesday at 18:00, it will be screened at the Sanchis Guarner Assembly Room of the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication a selection of science-fiction films revolving around the possibility to travel through time, flight travels to safer or more comfortable eras, or travels to change the history course.
The cycle will begin on Wednesday, April 2, with the screening of ‘Time After Time’, (Nicholas Meyer, 1955), one of the emblematic works of the director, who is at the front of the other science-fiction films as the second and the sixth parts of the saga ‘Star Trek’. The film tells a fictional story between the famous murderer Jack the Ripper and the writer HG Wells, who will be forced to pursue when the criminal flees police using the time machine devised by the British novelist. The presentation of the film and the subsequent discussion will be led by Ramón Alfonso, film critic and author of other works such as: ‘Diccionario de películas: El cine de ciencia-ficción’ (T&B Publishers).
Wednesday, 9 April, it will be screened ‘Timecrimes’ (2007), debut work of the Cantabrian filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo. Vigalondo, also director of other films like ‘Alien’, introduces us into a sordid universe in which a man finds a time machine, which will take you to be with himself and start a trip of unpredictable consequences.
The cycle will continue on Wednesday April 16 with the screening and subsequent discussion about the film ‘The Time Machine’ (George Pal, 1960), free adaptation of ‘The Time Machine’ by HG Wells. In the film, a British scientist of the late nineteenth century a sets on a temporary journey through a machine invented by himself, which will allow him to know the future of the society and to go through some of the most significant moments of the contemporary history, as the World War II.
The closing of the cycle will be on Wednesday 30 April with the screening of the film ‘Back to the Future’ (1985), the first part of the famous trilogy by Robert Zemeckis about the space-time travels and their consequences, probably the most popular film on this subject. The film, starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, narrates in a fun adventure key the journey of Marty McFly, a teenager of the eighties who will travel to 1955 in a DeLorean transformed into a time machine by his friend, the disgraced scientist Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown.
As it is usual in the film programming of the Cinema Club of the University of Valencia, each session will include a previous presentation and a colloquium later, in which the audience can participate in the event. All screenings will be in the original version with Spanish subtitles and admission will be free while space is available.
