Experts discuss about the Valencian Government's means to promote the participation in the creation of public policies

The IPRODES research group (Research in Inequality Processes) of the Universitat de València has organised, in the framework of the Open Government, Participation and Open Data Chair, a training and reflexive conference on the means that the Valencian Government has to promote citizen’s participation in the creation of public policies.

This group has researched into the formal bodies of participation of the Valencian Government. It is coordinated by the professor of Psychology and Social Anthropology of the Universitat de València, Rafael Castelló. The conference will deal with the characteristics and potentialities of citizen participation in bodies that exceed the local barriers but represent a key element in the implementation of public policies respectful of the needs and opinions of the citizens.

The conference takes place this Wednesday (27th September) at the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universitat de València from 9:30. The Council of Transparency, Social Responsibility, Participation and Cooperation supports this initiative. In fact, Manuel Alcazar, counsellor for Transparency, Social Responsibility, Participation and Cooperation, will be the person in charge of the inauguration together with Ernest Cano, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Carmen Montalbà, co-director of the Open Government, Participation and Open Data Chair.

Throughout the morning, it will be possible to know the results of the research conducted by the IPRODES group about the situation of the citizen’s participation within the Valencian Government. Then, there will be a round table to discuss the relation between this participation bodies and the governability in which several people will take part: Zulima Pérez, regional secretary of Transparency, Social Responsibility, Participation and Cooperation and professor of Constitutional Law and Political Science at the Universitat de València; Lorenzo Cotino, professor of the Department of Constitutional Law, Political and Administrative Sciences; and Joan Font, researcher at the Institute of Advanced Social Studies of CSIC.

In the afternoon, it will be the turn to share participation experiences in the regional scope with the proposals of the Valencian Country, with Aitana Joana Mas, general director of Transparency and Participation; the Catalan case, with Jordi Foz, secretary of Transparency and Open Government of the Catalonian Government; and the Basque case, with Luis Petrikorena, director of the Open Government of the Basque-Eusko Jaurlaritza Government.

Finally, the topic will be the participation in the local scope with the participation of Juana López, expert in youth and childhood and in Citizen’s Participation of the Quart de Poblet Town Hall; Gemma Gil, person in charge of the Citizen’s Participation at the Vila-real Town Hall and Julio Huerta, coordinator of the Horta Sud Foundation.
