Andrés Moya, full professor of genetics and researcher at Parc Científic’s Cavanilles University Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, has been awarded the Premio Nacional de Genética. The Spanish Genetics Society awards him for his innovative contribution to the dissemination of Drosophila melanogaster’s evolution, as well as the viruses, the symbiosis between bacteria and aphids, and the diversity of bacteria in the human body. Moya is the new director of Centre Superior d’Investigació i Salut Pública (CSISP).
The awards are financed by Fundació Pryconsa since 2009. The panel of judges emphasized that Andrés Moya has characterized the virus population and its infection transmission, has analyzed the smallest cellular genomes, and has described the metabolic complementarity among several organisms. Moreover, he ‘has transmited his level of exigency to colleages and scientific institutions, has published conceptual and historical essays on evolution and other biological problems.’ The Spanish Genetics Society, founded in 1972 to promote and spread genetic research in Spain, also tries to boost new researchers’ training.
NEW STAGE AT CSISP
This month, Andrés Moya has been appointed director of Centre Superior d’Investigació i Salut Pública, dependent on the Valencian Government. He has focused his research on the symbiosis among organisms and, particularly, he is interested in the study of the microbial communities which inhabit our bodies. Since 2008, Moya has promoted and been in charge of Unitat Mixta d’Investigació en Genòmica i Salut organized by Universitat de València and the Valencian Ministry for Health, where he has developed several research projects.
One of the main goals of Moya regarding CSISP is ‘the consolidation of the centre’s trajectory in order to achieve external resources, particularly finance by European Union and research contracts with both the public and private sectors.’
Andrés Moya simultaneously studied biology and philosophy at Universitat de València. He got his PhD in biology in 1983, and the PhD in philosophy, with excellence mention, in 1988, both at Universitat de València. In 1986, he founded the research group of evolutionary genetics at Departament de Genètica of Universitat de València. He became full university professor in 1993. He directed the department between 1995 and 1998. He has been one of the promoters of Cavanilles University Institute of of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, which he managed from 1998 to 2010. He also promoted the Centre d’Astrobiologia (INTA-CSIC) and the Consell d’Investigació i Salut Pública.
