Harvard University has posted on its YouTube channel the First IECO-RCC International Colloquium organised in Cambridge (USA) last April at the initiative of Manuel Guillen, professor of Business Administration Juan Jose Renau Piqueras and director the IECO-UNESCO International Chair in Management, Governance, Trust and Otherness, adhered to the University of Valencia.
The symposium was entitled 'Building Trust in organisations: the role of ethics, values and dignity'. Participating as speakers were William English, the Center for Ethics Edmond J. Safra Center of Harvard University, Donna Hicks, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, Mary Gentile's Giving Voice to Values Program at Babson College, and Robert McNulty, the Center for Business Ethics at the University of Bentley, and Guillén, of the University of Valencia. The seminar was attended by a dozen managers and academics in the Boston area.
The debate evolved around the question of why it is so hard to get trust in organisations. For Guillén, trust has to do basically with ethics, since it is a free human action: "When we become vulnerable to trust the other, and that entails a judgment about their competence, their intention and honesty , the ethical dimension is thus an essential aspect of the logic of confidence," he said. In his speech Professor of the University of Valencia also thought about how to regain the trust when it is lost within an organisation.
For his part, William English, Harvard University, noted in his speech that research in this field show that trust in organizations is based more on the personal of the members that the policies implemented in companies.
Participants discussed, among other aspects, the basic role of trust in the management of public and private organisations, the ways in which trust is built and destroyed, its relationship with the economic and the ethical foundations that support relationships confidence. The public had a very active role in the process of further questions.
Manuel Guillen has described this experience as "a very special moment in which you feel the joy of seeing the name of the University together with that of other prestigious institutions. This conference has been, above all, an opportunity to share ideas and learn from other American colleagues with similar concerns to ours. It was also very enriching the debate that arose from the questions asked by the invited participants, people with great experience in the world of business management. "
The symposium was jointly organised by the RCC (Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard) in whose headquarters the event took place and the IECO (Institute for Ethics and Organizational Communication). The Institute, led by Professor Guillén, aims to contribute to the revitalization of ethical thought in society, particularly in the professional field. Its aim is to increase knowledge and promote critical thinking about the role of ethics in the administration, management and communication in organisations, through research, training and counseling. IECO collaborates with universities and other research centers committed to the promotion of ethics in human behavior.
