In 2011, Universitat de València reduced its energy consumption (electricity, gas and water) for the fourth consecutive year. This saving has been achieved despite the construction of new buildings. A better control of energy consumption is part of the strict saving plan Universitat de València has been carrying out from 2008.
During 2011, the Universiat’s consumption of electricity was 50,244,811 Kwh, 8.82% less than the previous year. The gas consumption was 28,085,973 Kwht, which represents a lowering of 6.28% regarding 2010. The water consumption was 293,209 m3, 3.93% less than 2010’s consumption. This saving has been possible thanks to the effort of the whole university community, as the manager, Joan Oltra, has stated.
In 2011, Universitat de València owned 688,891 m2 built-up area, which meant a patrimony of 103 buildings and facilities. The previous year, this area covered 635,008 m2. Thus, despite this land increase, the energy saving has been possible.
This consumption reduction allowed to reduce the increase of prices as well. The electricity prices have incresed 1.93%, though Universitat de València has only increased its annual bill in a 0.85%. Regarding gas, the increase of the Universitat’s bill is 1.14%, and as for water, the institution payed 2.06 less in 2011than the previous year.
The Universitat keeps receiving money due to its photovoltaic electricity production (the institution owns the biggest urban solar panel park in Spain). This allowed to receive 597,402.62 Euros in 2011, even though the Spanish Government had reduced the bonus for photovoltaic productions.
Among the saving measures programmed, the Universitat intends to sell its supplies together with other universities. In 2012 and 2013, València and Miguel Hernández universities have jointly tendered the energy supply, which has allowed a bid price reduction of 23%. The Universitat de València’s manager is having conversations with the rest of universities to jointly invite tenders for energy supplies.
