The International Congress of the Biophysical Society of Spain, for the first time in the University

Ismael Mingarro and Jesús Salgado

The University of Valencia hosts for the first time the International Congress of the Biophysical Society of Spain (SBE), which this year celebrates its 13th edition. Sessions have begun on Wednesday at the Charles Darwin Room from the Burjassot Campus with the inaugural lecture entitled 'The polar interactions: a new motif for the assembly of membrane proteins', by Professor Anne S. Ulrich, from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany).

The closing will take place Friday at Joan Plaza room at the Botanic Garden and will feature a keynote address by Professor Gunnar von Heijne, from the Center for Biomembrane Research, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of Stockholm (Sweden), who will discuss the energies and forces governing the integration of membrane proteins in biological membranes.

The co-organisers of this conference, professors Ismael Mingarro and Jesus Salgado of our University, along with Professor Juan J. Calvete from the CSIC, explained that the objectives of this meeting are to serve as the core catalyst for the exchange of ideas that generate future scientific collaborations and to encourage the emergence of new fields of research. " "We have made every effort to ensure that, even in these times of crisis, which has a particularly negative impact on the Spanish public science, the annual meeting of the SBE can be held. It is not an excuse for organisational gaps that we may experience during the meeting, but a demonstration of how hard researches have to fight against absurd and devastating cuts in something so essential to the future as knowledge generation" said Mingarro and Salgado.

This international meeting is to be dedicated to who had been professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University, who was also co-organiser of the Congress, Professor Enrique Perez-Paya, who will be honored as he passed away a few weeks ago.

Besides the Congress' own scientific conferences, on Friday at 8:45 the Joan Plaza Room at the Botanic Garden will host as an additional session, the conference "Reform Proposals for the Spanish University System" by Professor Felix Goñi, University of Basque Country and Honorary Member of the Biophysical Society of Spain.

Biophysics is the science that studies the structure and function of living organisms through physical ideas and using physical methods. Its development is useful to understand the functioning of biological systems at the molecular level. The Biophysical Society of Spain was created in 1986 with the objetive to promote interdisciplinary research in this area.
