The National Assembly of the United Nations has re-elected Jorge Cardona, professor of Public International Law of the UV, as a member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. Cardona has obtained 143 votes, and he will stay in the committee during four more years. He is the only Spaniard who is a member of the given institution.
The Committee on the Rights of the Child has the role of examining the processes carried out in meeting the obligations contracted by the States which have ratified the Convention on the rights of Children. The Committee also supervises the application of the two facultative protocols of the Convention, publishes its interpretation of the content of the dispositions on human rights, in the form of general commitments on thematic issues and it organizes days of general debate.
Jorge Cardona (Valencia, 1957) is an internationalist specialized in human rights, with especial emphasis on children’s rights, and in the ambit of international cooperation. Having obtained an extraordinary award of llicenciatura (former Spanish undergraduate degree) in 1980 and of Doctoral Studies in 1984, he has been professor of International Public Law in Valencian universities (1980-1984; 1985-95; and since 2008), Alicante (1984-85) and Jaume I de Castellón (1995-2008). He is a member of the Chair Henri Rolin in the universities of Louvain La Neuve and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and of a Jean Monnet Chair (since 1997).
He is also President of the Mediterranean Institute of European Studies, and the Centre for Studies and National Relations (since 2007). Director of the Depository Library of the United Nations of the UV (since 2008), has been visitant professor in several universities of Europe, America and Africa.
Jorge Cardona is author of about a hundred and a half of publications on international law, especially on the Law of Treaties, law of the international responsibility, law of international organizations, human rights, peace maintenance and international security.
With regard to the Children’s Rights, Jorge Cardona has extensive experience, in the field of teaching as well as in the field of research.
Among other responsibilities he is a Court Reporter of the COMJIB on the Promotion and protection of human rights of underage people in the framework of criminal procedure, and on the Promotion and protection of human rights of the crime victims within the framework of the process, with particular reference to the underage victims, and for gender crimes and editor of the corresponding Recommendations approved in 2011 by the Latin-American ministers for Justice.
