José Luis Villacañas speaks on the experience of the 20th century and the probability of the humanism

The full teacher professor of the History of Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid José Luis Villacañas give a conference on “The experience of the 20th century and the probability of the humanism” this thursday, 18 December, at the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València. The event falls within a Cycle of conferences objected on the celebration of the first century of the Colegio Mayor San Juan de Ribera.

The conference, which is free entry until capacity limits, starts in the Aula Magna at the Cultural Centre La Nau at 19:30.

Since 1916,being the Civil War the only interruption, the Colegio Mayor San Juan de Ribera has formed university teachers, artists, doctors, researchers, lawyers, politicians, etc. The next 2016 the Colegio Mayor will turn 100 and because of this commemoration have scheduled a series of events, among which is a lecture that has been under development since January 2014 will conclude in 2015.

 

The cycle of conferences is organised by the Colegio Mayor San Juan de Ribera, the Universitat de València and the Universitat Politècnica de València. Some of the speakers that have been confirmed for this course include: José Vicente Castell, director of the Health Research Institute La Fe; Vicente Carbonell, property registar, Antonio Pich, full university professor of Physics at the Universitat de València or Juan José Garrido, principal of the Real Colegio del Corpus Christi in Valencia.

José Luis Villacañas Berlanga was born in 1955 in Ubeda (Jaén). Full university professor of Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid and Director of the library Saavedra Fajardo of Hispanic political thought, describes itself as "historian of philosophy, knowing the history of ideas and, ultimately, a philosopher".

Licensed in 1977 in Philosophy by the Universitat de València and grant holder by the Colegio Mayor San Juan de Ribera. Doctor of Philosophy from the same university with the thesis "Empirical Realism and Transcendental Idealism in Theoretical Philosophy of Kant. Levels of use and justification”, directed by Fernando Montero. He has served as professor of philosophy at the University of Valencia (1977-1986), as full university professor of History of Philosophy at the University of Murcia (1986-1994). He has been assigned to the Superior Council for Scientific Research from 1994-1997. He was Director-General for Books, Archives and Libraries of the Generalitat Valenciana from 1999-2003. Between 2003 and 2009 he held the chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Murcia and since 2009 is full university professor of History of Spanish Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid.

In 1989 he establishes the magazine Daímon, and he was its Secretary. Between 1995 and 1997 he runs the newspaper Debats and nowadays he is the director of the magazine of Politic Philosophy Res Publica. He has published over 200 articles and has authored numerous books, novels and essays on philosophy and history.
