The National Accreditation Entity (ENAC) has qualified Laram (Laboratori de Radioactivitat Ambiental) and has given it the technical expertise to implement trials in the environmental area. Laram is the first laboratory in the Universitat de València to have this qualification in accordance with UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005.
This international standard refers to ‘General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.’ The laboratory is located in the research building Jeroni Muñoz, at the Burjassot-Paterna campus. It is headed by the professor José Lorenzo Ferrero Calabuig of the Departament de Física Atòmica and is attached to SCSIE (Servicio Central de Soporte a la Investigación Experimental). Researchers from the Departament de Física Atòmica, Institut de Ciéncia de Materials, Unidad de Calidad and CSIC work in this laboratory.
Laram has been traditionally assisting the Nuclear Safety Council in the programme REM (sampling stations network). It also implements the quality assurance reviews of PVRA of the Cofrentes nuclear power plant. (through the agreement with the Generalitat Valenciana) and the wastewaters analysis (as stated in the Real Decreto 140/2003 of February the 7th, which esblishes the sanitary criteria for water intended for human consumption). These programmes are aimed at environmental radioactivity control.
In June, 2005, Laram was qualified with the ISO 9001 standard, which proves that it has all the working criteria established by UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 on ‘requirement systems of quality management’ and that it is currently in force by ‘identification of radioactive parametres’ (certificate number ES05/1301).
