Lynn Margulis is remembered on the first anniversary of her death

Scientist Lynn Margulis.

Universitat de València’s Chair for Science Dissemination, in cooperation with Societat Catalana de Biologia, which is adscribed to Institut d’Estudis Catalans, and Centre de Cultura Octubre have organized a tribute to North American biologist Lynn Margulis when it has been one year since she died. She is author of endosymbiotic origin of eukaryotic cells.

The activities are beginning today, October 25, with Sciences Bar ‘El planeta de los microbios’ at 19:00 in Centre Octubre’s cafeteria. Ricard Amills, researcher at the Astrobiology Centre and Ricard Guerrero, lecturer at Universitat de Bardelona, are taking part in this activity. Both are going to be chaired by the journalist Núria Cadenas.

The activity is about who governs nowadays: politicians or bankers? All this with the aim of stressing that everybody depends on the biochemical activities of microbes. Then, definitely world is governed by microbes.

Joan Plaça’s auditorium at the Botanic Garden, which is also collaborating, is hosting next Friday at 19:00 the lecture ‘Simbiosis y Evolución: hacia una biografía científica de Lynn Margulis’ by lecturer at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Antonio Lazcano. The event is going to be introduced by journalists Reis Juan and Emili Piera. The expert in Margulis explains that in 1967 the biologist published on the Journal of Theoretical Biology her proposal on the endosymbiotic origin of eukaryotic cells: ‘Although this idea has been thought to be suggested in the end of XIX century, now it is proved that these papers were alternative proposals to Darwinism and had little empirical support.’

The XII Matinal de Evolución, an activity taking place next Saturday from 9:00 to 14:00 at Centre Octubre is also devoted to symbiosis and evolution. This event is ending the tribute to Margulis. The full professor of genetics and chairwoman of Cavanilles Institute for Biodiversity and Evolution Biology, Amparo Latorre, is attending the session, which is a meeting point for secondary and upper-secondary education teachers. Toni Gavaldón, researcher at Centre de Regulació Genòmica, and Juli Peretó, lecturer of biochemistry at UV and member of IEC, are taking part in the event as well.

These activities are framed under the celebration of the centennary of Societat Catalana de Biologia and the 41st edition of Premis Octubre. Other entities also supporting are Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) at the Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, Xarxa Vives, and Acció Cultural del País Valencià.
