The psychiatrist and scientific coordinator of the National Mental Health Strategy, Manuel Gómez-Beneyto (Valencia, 1936), provides the conference 'Mental health, economic crisis and other crises', this Wednesday, 8 May at 18:30 in the Cultural Centre La Nau. Gómez-Beneyto, honorary professor of the University of Valencia and chairman of the National Commission of Psychiatry, is calling for greater attention to a secondary issue on the political agenda.
The conference, free entry until full capacity, will be held in the auditorium of the historic building of the University of Valencia and can be followed live on television at the University (http://mediauni.uv.es/tv). The debate, which will be presented and moderated by Rafael Tabarés, professor of psychiatry at the University of Valencia, is part of Claustre Obert programming, a space for debate and reflection created by the University of Valencia and the newspaper El Pais on issues that most concern the public.
A context like the present, of prolonged economic crisis, affects the mental health of citizens. The economic crisis has not only a direct effect on the overall health system financing, but also has a "personal" impact on the mental health of the population. Unemployment, debt, evictions, etc., derived from this economic crisis are causing "personal crises" or mental disorders that the statistics often ignore.
As a prelude to the debate, NAU XXI, the university think tank of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality at the University of Valencia (http://nauxxi.uv.es), contains a series of papers on it. All this material as well as the video conference by Gomez-Beneyto (a posteriori) are part of the section "Public health and economic crisis". Through this debate XXI NAU tries to clarify what impact it has on public health the current economic crisis. Besides making all this material available, the platform invites the public to participate, leaving comments and adding material on this subject.
