
The tenured lecturer in the Geography Department at Universitat de València María José Estrela Navarro has been appointed president of the Spanish Association of Climatology (Asociación Española de Climatología, AEC). The appointment ceremony took place last September 27 in the extraordinary meeting of the VIII Congreso Internacional ‘Cambio climático. Extremos e Impactos’.
María José Estrela completed her studies at the Atmospheric Environmental Service in Canadá, and at the Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterráneo-CEAM (1991-2008). She became an expert in climatology and metereological risks in the western basin of the Mediterranean sea. Working at the CEAM, she was deputy director in the area of climatology-meteorology. Since 2006, she is secretary of the Spanish committee for the Word Climate WRCP (World Research Climate Programme), and she is the head of the research project ‘Laboratorio de Meteorología-Climatología’ Universitat de València- CEAM. Her lines of research focus on climatic change, meteorological risks and analysis of new water resources.
AEC was officially founded in 1998. It is a national association gathering many researchers and professionals of different areas who have an interest in climate. One of the members is also a lecturer at UV, Vicente Caselles.
The association celebrates scientific meetings every two years. The people who takes part exchange ideas and promote initiatives with the goal of making climate science progress. Other activities of the association are the organization of seminars and specializez courses. It is good to mention the summer course they have been carrying out for 8 years, which has a favorable reception.
