The oncologist Andrés Cervantes has joined the Reial Acadèmia de Medicina de la Comunitat Valenciana. The act, celebrated last Tuesday, was presented by the full university professor Ana Lluch. Andrés Cervantes is professor of Medicine at Universitat de València since 1991 and chief of the Oncology Service at the Clinical University Hospital of Valencia.
During the joining act, doctor Cervantes thanked his colleagues, professors, mentors, researchers, his family and wife for their support and affection, without which he could not carry out his work.
His intervention, with the title ‘La evolución del tratamiento de cáncer de recto localizado: la multidisciplinariedad empieza en casa’ (The evolution of the treatment for localised colon cancer: multidisciplinarity starts at home), highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach in order to achieve the best results, both of diagnosis and treatment, which has permitted in the past years the survival of most of the patients with cancer. However, as he has declared “what is already done in not important, but what is still to do is”.
Andrés Cervantes coordinates the Oncology Area at the Institute of Health Research - INCLIVA, manages the Oncology Clinical Trial Unit phase I, and he is the main researcher in the research group for colorectal cancer and new therapeutic developments in solid tumours.
After studying medicine at Universidad de Murcia, he specialised in oncology in the Clinical University Hospital of Valencia and after he finished his residence period, he got his PhD in the Free University Hospital of Amsterdam, with a thesis on the resistance to multiple medicines, made in the cellular pharmacology.
Cervantes is considered as one of the best European specialists in clinical research on rectal cancer, subject he has developed in multiple researches and publications about the quality of multidisciplinary work and the evaluation of the quality of mesorectal surgery, as well as the optimization of the most suitable idea for initial therapy, specially, for the treatment of the cancer in the superior third of the rectum.
He has written more than two hundred articles and reviews of works published in international journals.
He also is editor of the journal ‘Cancer Treatment Reviews’, and since January 2014 he also is adjunct editor in the gastrointestinal cancer section, in the journal ‘Annals of Oncology’. He was recently appointed as honour member by the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, one of the few Spanish people who has received this recognition.
