The journal Pasajes, which is a joint publication by Universitat de València and Fundación Cañada Blanch, launched its 36 issue yesterday, January the 24th, at 19:00. It included a report on intellectual property, one of the vital topics of the current public debate. The event took place at the Universitat de València’s Rector Peset residence hall (plaza de San Nicolás, 4).
Different perspectives are interwined in the report, such as access to culture, copyright respect, cultural industries financing or the effect of communication new technologies.
As the leader of this issue states: ‘there is no doubt that we are in the middle of a social debate where more than arbitrary opinions or too specific interests are at stake. The future development of a feasible economy and its new sectors will probably depend on the settling and display of the knowledge society. A key to this is the conferring and recognition of copyrights. Nowadays, the copyright concept presents many and complex profiles considering that individual authors and vast industrial frameworks coexist'.
Many topics are being debated in the presentation, like the intellectual property and its current problems (the so called Ley Sinde, the debates in USA, the seizure of downloading web sites, among others), or the funding of publishing industry and copyrights. The following figures are participating in this discussion: Pedro de Andrés Romero (president of CEDRO), Joan Carles Girbés (publishing director of Edicions Bromera and vice president of the Asociación de Editores del País Valenciano), Guillermo Palao (full professor in international private law at Universitat de València and one of the authors in this issue), Concepción Sáiz (tenured lecture in civil law and expert in intellectual property) and Guillermo Quintás (tenured lecturer in phylosophy and coordinator of the report).
