
The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos has given the Medal for Fine Arts Merit to the professor Román de la Calle, full university ptofessor of Aesthetics and Art Theory of the Universitat de València. The presentation of the Medal will be on Tuesday, 14 June, at 19 hours, in an event that will take place at the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia The ‘laudatio’ will be read by the President of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.
Román de Calle (Alcoi, 1942) is full university professor of Aesthetics and Arts Theory of the Universitat de València. Philosopher, researcher, essayist, translator and art critic, he was director of the University Instute of Educational Creativity and Innovation of the Universitat de València and member of the former Martínez Guerricabeitia Board of the General Foundation of the Universitat de València, converted now into the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection, a body which is responsible of the management of the contemporary art collection of the Universitat.
In 1983, he started up the Documentation Centre of Valencian Contemporary Art of the Universitat de València, and he has been co-director of four editions, with biennial duration, of the Master’s degree in Aesthetics and Musical Creativity and of three editions of the one-year Postgraduate Course in Artistic Education and Museums, both of them at the Universitat de València.
The work of Román de Calle has been acknowledge in different occasions since he started his career as student. He was awarded with the National Prize in Philosophy (End of Studies of licenciatura, former Spanish undergraduate degree) and with the Extraordinary Licenciatura with the Thesis about the Art Theory of György Lukács. He has also been awarded with the Order of Alfonso X the Wise; the Professional Merit Silver Medal of the Ministry of Education; the Medal of the Facultiy of Fine Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de València (1999); and the National Art Critic Award ‘Espais’; and he has been correspondent academic of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando of Madrid, and permanent member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos of Valencia, which he also directed.
During his teaching at the universities of València, Politècnica de València and Complutense of Madrid, he has directed more than fifty doctoral thesis, as many licenciatura thesis and research works of Third Cycle.
In the literary field, De la Calle has written poetry in Valencian, with several awards, as well as theatre, translations, critics of plastic arts and essays. In this field, some works stand out, such as ‘En torno al hecho artístico’ (1981), Award of essay in Spanish of the Critic of the City of Valencia; ‘Estética & Crítica’ (1983), work that was finalist of the same modality and award, ‘Lukács: Estética y Poética’ (1985); ‘De la imatge a la paraula’ (1988); ‘L’Educació per l’Art: valors pedagògics i estètics de la modernitat’ (2000); ‘John Dewey: Experiencia Estética & Experiencia Crítica’ (2001); ‘Senderos entre el arte y lo sagrado’ (2003); ‘A propósito de la Crítica y otros ensayos’ (2004); or his ‘Repertorio Bibliográfico de Investigación Estética’ (1986).
Additionally, he has written monographic books, he has taken part in several collective specialised publications, as well as in the co-ordination of several volumes, he has been part of different editorial boards of specialised journals and he ahs collaborated assiduously in daily press, general journals and radios from his professional and university activity.
As a professional of Fine Arts, in addition to advise different municipal institutions and private entities, he has been curator of exhibitions in cultural centres and musueums, such as the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM), the Museums Consortium of the Valencian Government, the Universitat de València, the Sala Parpalló of the Valencian Council or the CAM.
