In fulfilling one of the objectives of the Plan for Equality to make women at the University visible and recover historical memory, Professor Carmen Diaz Agulló presents research on the 'Origins, Evolution and Forms of Access and Integration of Women in the Normal School of Education of Valencia between 1867 and 1967 '. The summary, under the name of 'Normalist Women: Teachers of Teachers', is exhibited in today's official ceremony at the Saló d'Actes at the Office of the Principal at 12:00.
Among these women, the name of Carmen Garcia de Castro, to whom the event is dedicated, stands out. Professor of Education at the Normal School of Teachers, she was expelled and separated from service during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. Her record, by order of the judge, was sanctioned at the University so as not to comply with the Military Board's orders of 13 October 1925 prohibiting academic freedom. After finishing the period of the dictatorship, she was amnestied on February 5, 1930. Later, she was arrested in 1939, after finishing the Civil War, tried for a war tribunal and imprisoned.
Then, once again, the University of Valencia celebrates the 8th of March, International Women's Day, and makes public its statement of commitment to equality between women and men as an inalienable part of universal human rights and therefore, constitutive of any democratic system.
Moreover, in the University has resolved to implement the I Plan for Equality and the evaluation notes that many goals have been accomplished and many actions taken, but there are still weaknesses that need to be worked on and strengthened, such as the role of women in research and enhancing their presence in the most advanced research groups. Similarly, education in equality as the backbone of the way to teach new generations of students of our faculties and schools and equal presence of women and men in the management and organization has to ensure that balance that needs to be reflected in all institutional activities.
