Yesterday, the Universitat de València’s Principal, Esteban Morcillo, along with the Dean of the Facultat de Medicina i Odontologia, Antonio Pellicer, and the Valencian minister for health, Luis Rosado, presented the new decentralized teaching model for Health Sciences studies. This initiative will allow students to pursue their degrees entirely in the hospitals.
The announcement has was made on the occasion of a visit to the works carried out by Universitat de València and Fundación Hospital General in the mentioned hospital. From Universitat de València, Federico Pallardó, Vice-dean of the Facultat de Medicina i Odontologia, and José Manuel Almerich, Principal’s delegate for Health Sciences studies, were also present in the announcement.
This new teaching model will come into effect next academic year 2012-2013, and will allow health sciences students (medicine, odontology, nursing and physiotherapy) to pursue their studies in hospitals comprehensively. This will be possible form their third year of studies. Until now, students only went to hospitals to carry some practicals, but in the near future they will be able to take theoretical and practical lesson with real patients inside hospitals.
Esteban Morcillo defined the use of the public hospitals network as a ‘necessity’ in order to improve the practical side of the health sciences studies. The new facilities at Hospital General are being built for this purpose. These new spaces will be used as ten classrooms. The usable floor area is 2,263 square meters, and the investment amounts to 2,625,897 Euros.
The Dean in the Facultat de Medicina described the new teaching model: ‘it is about bringing students to the hospitals for their direct learning.’ He pointed out that resident doctors are treated well at hospitals, but, on the contrary, this is not always the case with students. With this new teaching model this situation might be overcome.
The ministry stated that the four public hospitals in Valencia ‘are Universitat de València’s’ and that the hospitals are ‘the ideal scenario to achieve an integrated teaching.
