The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry hosts the opening of ‘BodayPaint Anatómico’, an exhibition that displays physiological and pathological images recreated artistically over the body this Monday, 3 April. The proposal, created by the students of Medicine of the Universitat de València and Fine Arts of the Universitat Politènica, intends to break with the tradition of studying Anatomy by illustration that represents parts of the body.
The cultural association “Els Quatre Gats de Medicina”, with more than 25 years of history in the Universitat de València, launches a project that combines art, science and dissemination and is composed of 15 works in which anatomy is highlighted over the body, which becomes the canvas for artists. The sample will be presented at 18:00h at the exhibition room of the Faculty of Medicine and Odontology.
In BodyPaint Anatómico, the students of Medicine have applied their knowledge of human anatomy to advise students of Fine Arts. Furthermore, the photographer David Gimeno, who studied at the College of Art and Design of Valencia, has added his vision to achieve the scientific dissemination objectives through portrait.
“We think that anatomic representation over the naked body of the models is the most beautiful and natural way of being in contact with the human anatomy” claims the president of Els Quatre Gats, Jordi Gaja. He has also stated that “the scientific dissemination has to go beyond the specialised medical circles and reach a more general audience”. Furthermore, “the sample is an original and accurate representation of the human anatomy by the person who best knows it. It is a beautiful and artistic way to bring the science closer and know our anatomy”, according to a student of the Universitat de València.
In the pathological part of the sample, which will be exhibited at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry until 12 April, there are works such as Cáncer de Mama (Breast Cancer) or Carcinoma de pulmón (Lung Carcinoma). With them, the students of Medicine can use their artistic skills to complain about the risks of smoking and its consequences: the most direct and impressive vision of this pathology is the representation over our own body.
As a complement, there are some physiological anatomic samples such as Musculatura anterior y lateral de la pierna (Anterior and lateral musculature of the leg) or Planos musculares de la espalda (Muscular planes of the back). The latter represents exactly the different topographical planes that are in the musculature of the back, from the most superficial ones (trapezium bone) to the most profound ones (serratus).
The exhibition has received the support of the Culture Comission of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València and the Assembly of Representatives.
