Tecla Arts Centre inaugurates today, at 19:30, the exhibition ‘¿Quién tiene miedo del rojo?’ (Who is afraid of red?), formed by sixty paintings and etchings of Martínez Guerricabeitia’s collection from the University of Valencia. These works reflect Spanish artists’ art during the 20th Century with one common denominator: their positioning in favour of compromised art.
‘Who is afraid of red?’ takes the title from Valerio Adami’s work which will also be available at the exhibition, which will remain opened at the Tecla Arts Centre until May 8 2015.
The University of Valencia’s collection Martínez Guerricabeitia is made up of mainly Spanish artists from the 20th Century who have centred their creative ideals on socio-political critics.
The exhibition is divided into six scopes: ‘Los fotomontajes de Josep Renau’ (‘Josep Renau’s Photomontages), a form of activism, ‘El grabado al servicio de la revolution’ (‘Etchings servicing the revolution’); ‘Crónica de la realidad’ (‘Chronicle of Reality’); ‘La figuración narrativa’ (‘Narrative Figuration’); ‘Apropiación de iconos artísticos y revolucionarios’ (‘Appropriation of artistic and revolutionary icons’).
At the exhibition there will be works of different artists such as Anzo, Equipo Crónica, Josep Renau, Manuela Ballester, Antoni Tàpies, Antonio Saura, Josep Manuel Bouzo, Artur Heras, Rogelio López Cuenca, Juan del Campo, Javier Valdeón, Simeón Saiz Ruiz, Pedro Romero and Valerio Adami among others.
The collection is managed by the Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust, founded by the initiative of the entrepreneur Jesús Martínez Guerricabeitia and the University of Valencia General Foundation in order to broadcast contemporary art and to increase the patrimony.
In 1999, the Martínez Guerricabeitia family donated to the University over 400 pieces - drawings, paintings, photographs, serigraph and etchings- of over 200 referent authors of contemporary arts from the second half of the 20th Century and pertaining to currents of thoughts close to intellectual and ideologically committed art. The collection keeps on expanding.
The inauguration of ‘Who is afraid of red?’ will take place at the Tecla Arts Center at 19:30 with the assistance of L’hospitalet Major Nuria Marin; the Councillor for Culture Jaume Graells; the director of Activities of the Martínez Guerricabeitia, José Pedro Martínez and the manager of the University of Valencia General Foundation, Cristóbal Suria.
