
Today, October 23 at 19:00, Universitat de València’s poetry club and Fundación Centro de Poesía José Hierro are paying tribute to the poet in La Nau’s main hall. Several activities are being carried this year to remind the work of the poet from Madrid when it has been ten years since he died and ninety years since he was born.
Valencia was one of the key cities in Hierro’s life. He belongs to the first postwar generation, and adscribed to the so called uproot poetry or existential poetry, which was very influenced by Juan Ramón Jiménez, Antonio Machado, and Pedro Salinas, among others. After the Spanish Civil War was finished, he spent four years in prison. Has was awarded several prizes like the Príncipe de Asturias prize in 1981.
The tribute is starting at 19:00 with a round table having Francisco Brines, Pedro J. de la Peña, Antonio Méndez Rubio, and Elia Saneleuterio. The event is going to be organized and chaired by the head of the poetry club Begonya Pozo. Then, at 20:00, a reading of his poems by Asociación Poética Caudal is going to take place.
Entrance is free and limited to the hall's capacity.
