Tonight, June 29th, Capella de Ministrers is playing at Serenates festival, which is an event organized by Universitat de València, Instituto Valenciano de la Música and Consorcio de Museos de la Comunidad Valenciana. This band, conducted by Carles Magraner, is offering a concert titled ‘Madre de Deus: Lírica i litúrgica de l’Espanya medieval’, which is a programme based on a review of Spanish works written from XII to XV centuries. The event is taking place at 22:30 in the venue Centre del Carme, and the band is interpreting the famous Sibila’s chant, among ancient songs.
Entrance to this concert is free but invitations must be collected one hour before the beginning in Centre del Carme.
Sibilas were women who believed they were inspired by gods. They were virgins and prophets, and had an unfriendly character. They were known in the V century before Christ, but they became very popular soon. Among them, Sibila Eritrea is the one who announces the Final Judgement’s day and the coming of Jesus Christ. The Greek acrostic is translated into Latin, and then into the Romance languages from XIII century. Today, many versions of Sibila’s chant are kept. One of the first is Madre de Deu’s song, by the king Alfonso X. Other versions of this prophetic chant are kept at different cathedrals and were adapted to new times as that of Toledo, for instance.
Since its foundation in 1987, Capella de Ministrers has recovered part of the Valencian music repertoire from the Middle Ages to 1800. They have played in the Auditorio Nacional, Palacio de la Música de Valencia and Palacio de la Música Catalana. They have took part in festivals, such as the Música Antigua de Barcelona festival, Madrid Cultural 1992, Teatro Clásico de Almagro, Música Antigua y Barroca de Peñíscola, Perelada, Quincena Musical Donostiarra, Los Veranos de Villa (Madrid), Grec (Barcelona), Música y Danza festival in Granada, and Música Religiosa in Cuenca. They have also gone on tours around France, Belgium, Portugal, Holland, Egipt, Tunisia, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Mexico, Finland, Austria, Cuba, China, Croatia, etc.
They have recorded 43 albums for EGT, Blaum Auvidis and CDM, they exclusive record label. These works have received prizes from the especialized press and the Spanish Ministry of Culture to the best recording production. They have been awarded the Importante prize by Prensa Valenciana publishing company.
Both IVM’s financial support, thanks to the Valencian Government, and INAEM’s financial support, thanks to the Spanish Ministry for Culture, allow the recording and concert dissemination. Universidad de València funds the search, recover and dissemination activities of music patrimony carried out by Capella de Ministrers.
