The sculptor Andreu Alfaro, 83 years old, died Thursday night at Valencia. The University of Valencia, decided last year to grant him the University Medal, but the award ceremony was postponed due to the health prolblems of the artist. Last Sunday was celebrated a ceremony in his honour at his studio.
He was associated with Grup Parpalló (1957) and influenced by Constructivists, such as Constantin Brancusi o Antoine Pevsner and by Jorge Oteiza. His works that were exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1966 'My Black Brother' reached an international prestige.
At the end of the 60s he experimented with metallic materials, as steel and auluminum. In 1980 with wire and marble, year in which he also received the Award of Honor Jaume I, and in 1981 the National Award of Fine Arts. In 1991 the Diputació de Valencia awarded him with the Prize Alfons Roig of Fine Arts.
Andreu Alfaro, applied his knowledge of geometry to create abstract works. His works, are usually full of nuances that play with the module, with the series and with light and color. He also was described as a minimalist artist, although this definition doesn't fit in a description of art as full of meaning.
On a personal level, Andreu Alfaro was an artist commited to the society in which he lived. Ideals of democracy, freedom and illustration are always expressed in his works,as well as his nationalistic interests.
